It’s easy to forget you need to change your furnace filters. In fact, it’s easy to forget you even have furnace filters at all because they are handily tucked away and we all know that out of sight often equals out of mind. However, not changing furnace filters regularly can cause unclean air to be circulated through your home and can also impact the efficiency of your HVAC unit. As winter quickly approaches in Omaha, NE, here are three signs for every home owner that might mean it’s time for a change.

  • It’s Been a While  –  We recommend changing your filter every month, especially during the height of summer or winter when your HVAC system is working its hardest. We understand this might be a little much for most people, so a good rule of thumb is to change your filters every three months minimum.
  • Your Bill is Creeping Up  –  This might be a difficult one to keep an eye on, especially with the fluctuating temperatures. However, if you’re pretty sure you’ve not been cranking up the heat lately and your bill is still getting bigger, a dirty filter might be the culprit. Change your filter and you might see as much as a 5 to 15% decrease in your bill.
  • You’re Not Feeling Well  –  Again, this one can be a tough sign to link back to your furnace filter because there is usually an outbreak of allergies and sinus problems as the seasons change. But if your allergies seem to be much worse lately or you find your breathing is more labored than normal, a compromised filter could be affecting the quality of air in your home.

The good news is, changing your furnace filters is not difficult, nor is it overly expensive. Simply take a look at the bottom of your furnace to find access to the filter housing. Pop out the old filter and hold it up to the light. If you cannot see through it, this is a sign that it’s time to change it. Note the size of the filter to make sure you are purchasing the correct replacement and note the arrow on the filter frame that shows the correct air flow direction. Slide in the new frame and you’re done! Better air quality and efficiency is on the way.

Changing your furnace filter regularly is an easy and effective way to reduce allergens and heat bills while extending the life of your HVAC system. If you have any questions about your furnace or about the proper filters, please don’t hesitate to call.
